Richmond, Virginia - Sports betting activity in Virginia experienced a strong rebound in March 2025, with both handle and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) showing considerable increases compared to the previous year. According to newly released data from the Virginia Lottery, consumers across the Commonwealth wagered nearly $690 million during the month.
The total sports betting handle for March reached $689.7 million. This figure represents a notable 8% increase when compared to the handle reported in March of the previous year, and a substantial 23.9% rise from the wagering volume seen in February 2025.
Breaking down the handle, online and mobile platforms continued to dominate the market, accounting for the vast majority of wagers at $683.1 million. Retail sportsbooks operating within the state’s authorised casinos contributed the remaining $6.6 million to the total handle.
Higher overall player spending translated directly into increased revenue for operators. Virginia’s adjusted gross sports betting revenue for March stood at $45.1 million. This result comfortably surpassed the $42.4 million reported in March 2024, marking a 6.4% year-on-year increase. However, the March AGR did fall by 27.1% compared to the exceptionally high figure posted in February 2025.
Similar to handle, mobile betting was the primary driver of revenue, generating $44.4 million of the total AGR. Retail sportsbooks contributed $692,282. The statewide hold percentage for March came in at 6.58%.
The Virginia Lottery data also indicated that players in the state received back approximately $639 million in winnings from their March bets. Additionally, $5.6 million was reported under unspecified “other deductions” by operators.
As a result of the month’s revenue, Virginia collected $6.8 million in sports betting tax revenue. The majority of this, $6.6 million, was allocated to the state’s General Fund, while $168,873 was directed towards the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.
In March 2025, the Virginia market saw 14 mobile sports betting operators and three retail casinos authorised to accept legal sports wagers.
